Bringing emotions onto the canvas is what makes painting a joy for me. At the beginning of the artistic process it is neither the motif, nor the background, nor the structure of the picture that comes first. I let the emotions lead me and develop the picture out of them.

Not knowing how the canvas will change, and responding to it as I go, probably has to do with my own history. I began painting shortly before I was given my cancer diagnosis. And the way I had to deal with the circumstances of such an illness is the way I deal with canvas and paint. It is a process in the here and now, and you see what life gives you.

That is how many pictures often come to lie beneath the picture the viewer gets to see. But these invisible pictures matter for the result too, just as in life it is not only the visible things that are decisive.

I am an osteopath and have therefore always had a relationship to the body and to all the layers we cannot perceive with our eyes.
